Why Use Aspen 2 Instead of Ordinary Petrol?
One of the biggest differences between Aspen 2 and ordinary forecourt petrol is ethanol.
Aspen 2 contains no ethanol. Regular petrol now commonly contains ethanol, with E10 petrol containing up to 10% ethanol. Ireland has moved to E10 petrol as part of its renewable-fuel requirements.
This is particularly important in small petrol engines and machinery that may not be used every day.
Aspen explains that ethanol attracts moisture, which can contribute to starting difficulties and fuel-related problems in small engines. Aspen 2 avoids this problem because the fuel is ethanol-free.
Conventional Mixed Petrol – Use Within 30 Days
This is particularly important if you normally mix ordinary petrol and 2-stroke oil yourself.
STIHL recommends avoiding storage of self-mixed 2-stroke petrol for more than 30 days.
With ethanol-containing fuel, moisture can bind with the ethanol and the petrol/oil mixture can begin to separate. Once this happens, the correct distribution of lubricating oil throughout the fuel can no longer be guaranteed. STIHL also warns that vigorously shaking separated fuel does not necessarily restore it to a correctly mixed product.
For this reason, if you are using conventional petrol mixed with 2-stroke oil:
Mix only what you expect to use and aim to use it within 30 days.
This can be particularly relevant for machinery such as:
- Chainsaws used occasionally
- Consaws kept as backup machines
- Hedge trimmers used seasonally
- Brushcutters and strimmers
- Pole pruners
- Landscaping machinery
- Emergency or standby equipment
Aspen 2 – Stable for 3 to 5 Years
Aspen 2 is very different.
Because Aspen is an ethanol-free alkylate fuel, it has excellent long-term storage stability.
Aspen states that its alkylate fuel has a typical storage life of approximately 3–5 years, compared with around 3–5 months for ordinary petrol.
That makes Aspen particularly attractive for equipment that may sit unused for weeks or months.
Conventional self-mixed petrol: STIHL recommends no more than 30 days storage.
Aspen 2: approximately 3–5 years storage life.
For many occasional machinery users, that difference alone can make Aspen 2 worth considering.
No Measuring – No Mixing – No Guesswork
Aspen 2 comes premixed at 50:1, with 2% fully synthetic 2-stroke oil already included.
That means there is no need to:
- Measure 2-stroke oil
- Calculate your petrol/oil ratio
- Carry separate petrol and oil
- Wonder how old your mixed petrol is
- Risk forgetting to add 2-stroke oil
- Dispose of stale mixed petrol after long periods of storage
Simply open the container and fill compatible equipment.
Why Is Correct 2-Stroke Mixing Important?
A 2-stroke engine relies on the oil mixed with its petrol to provide lubrication.
An incorrect fuel-to-oil ratio can cause serious engine problems. STIHL specifies a 50:1 petrol-to-oil ratio for its relevant 2-stroke machinery.
Aspen 2 removes the possibility of accidentally mixing the fuel at the wrong ratio because the correct oil quantity is already incorporated into the fuel.
Can I Use Aspen 2 in a STIHL Chainsaw?
Aspen 2 is designed for compatible air-cooled, land-based 2-stroke engines, including chainsaws.
It is therefore a popular option for chainsaw users who want an ethanol-free, ready-mixed 50:1 fuel.
If you are unsure whether Aspen 2 is suitable for your particular STIHL machine, ask the team at A-Z Hire – STIHL Authorised Dealer and Service Centre in Dublin before use.
We sell, service and repair 2-stroke equipment and can advise you on the correct fuel for your machine.
Is Aspen 2 Suitable for a Petrol Consaw?
Yes, Aspen specifically lists power cutters among the land-based two-stroke equipment suitable for Aspen 2.
That makes Aspen 2 particularly useful for professional users operating:
- Petrol consaws
- Disc cutters
- Cut-off saws
- Chainsaws
- Hedge trimmers
- Clearing saws
- Brushcutters
- Other compatible two-stroke equipment
For contractors who may keep a backup machine in the van or store equipment between projects, Aspen’s long storage life can be especially useful.
Aspen 2 Contains No Ethanol
Aspen 2 is ethanol-free.
This is one of its biggest advantages compared with modern E10 forecourt petrol.
E10 petrol can contain up to 10% ethanol. Ethanol attracts moisture, which is one reason long-term fuel storage can become problematic in small machinery.
Aspen’s ethanol-free formulation allows the fuel to remain stable for years rather than months.
Cleaner Fuel for Your Engine
Aspen alkylate petrol contains far fewer undesirable components than conventional petrol and is designed to burn cleanly.
Aspen states that its fuel contains virtually none of substances such as benzene, olefins and aromatic hydrocarbons found in conventional petrol. It also produces significantly less carbon deposit build-up inside the engine.
The potential advantages include:
- Cleaner combustion
- Reduced carbon deposits
- Cleaner spark plugs and combustion chambers
- Less fuel-related deterioration during storage
- Easier starting after extended periods without use
- Reduced exposure to undesirable exhaust components
- More predictable fuel quality
- No ethanol
For professional operators using petrol machinery for extended periods, these can be important benefits.
Aspen 2 for Machinery That Is Only Used Occasionally
Aspen 2 makes particular sense if you own machinery that may only be used a handful of times each year.
For example:
Homeowner Chainsaw
If your chainsaw is used to cut timber a few times per year, keeping conventional mixed petrol for months is not recommended.
Aspen 2 can remain stable for years, making it much better suited to occasional use.
Hedge Trimmer
Petrol hedge trimmers can spend much of the year in storage.
Using a long-life ethanol-free fuel reduces concerns about leaving ageing conventional petrol in the fuel system between uses.
Backup Consaw
Contractors often keep a second petrol consaw or power cutter as backup.
Aspen allows fuel to remain ready for considerably longer periods without the same deterioration associated with ordinary pump petrol.
Aspen 2 vs Conventional Mixed Petrol
Ordinary Petrol + 2-Stroke Oil
- You must mix it yourself
- Correct ratio must be measured
- E10 can contain up to 10% ethanol
- STIHL recommends storing self-mixed 2-stroke fuel for no longer than 30 days
- Fuel can deteriorate during storage
- Risk of incorrect oil ratio
Aspen 2
- Ready mixed
- Correct 50:1 ratio
- 2% synthetic 2-stroke oil included
- No ethanol
- Approximately 3–5 year storage life
- Designed specifically for compatible 2-stroke machinery
- No mixing or measuring required
Is Aspen 2 Better for Winter Storage?
For machinery that is stored over winter or for long periods, Aspen 2 has a significant advantage over ordinary petrol.
Aspen states that its fuel remains stable for approximately 3–5 years and can be left in machinery between uses without the fuel deterioration associated with conventional petrol.
This can make it an excellent choice for seasonal garden machinery and backup equipment.
Aspen 2 or Aspen 4 – Which Do I Need?
This is an important distinction.
Aspen 2 contains 2-stroke oil and is intended for compatible land-based 2-stroke engines.
Aspen 4 does not contain 2-stroke oil and is intended for compatible 4-stroke engines, where the engine lubrication is provided separately.
If your machine requires petrol to be mixed with 2-stroke oil, Aspen 2 may be the appropriate product.
If your machine has a separate engine oil sump or dipstick, you will generally need a 4-stroke fuel such as Aspen 4 instead.
If you’re not sure, ask us before filling the machine.
