I’m a Flooring & Wet Room Installer – Should I Use a FUTECH 3D or 4D Laser?

When it comes to installing floors and wet rooms, precision is everything. But having the right laser level can make the job a whole lot easier.

As a professional flooring and wet room installer, I know that even a few millimetres can make a massive difference to the finished job. Whether I’m laying timber flooring, installing large-format tiles or creating the perfect drainage falls in a wet room, getting my levels right is absolutely essential.

I’ve been looking at two professional laser levels from FUTECH:

  • FUTECH Multicross 3D 18VMAX
  • FUTECH Multicross 4D 18VMAX Electronic

Both are impressive tools, but there’s one that really stands out for the type of work I do.

And having used the 4D, I can tell you exactly why.

FUTECH 3D – A Brilliant All-Round Laser for Flooring and Tiling

The FUTECH Multicross 3D 18VMAX is an excellent professional green laser level for flooring installers, tilers, carpenters and general contractors.

With three 360° laser planes – one horizontal and two vertical – it provides accurate reference lines around the room.

Its key features include:

  • Three 360° green laser planes
  • Accuracy of ±2 mm at 10 metres
  • Pendulum self-levelling system
  • Manual slope adjustment
  • Compatibility with major 18V power tool batteries using interchangeable adapters
  • IP54 dust and water resistance

For most standard flooring jobs, such as laying laminate, engineered timber, checking subfloors or setting out wall and floor tiles, the FUTECH 3D is more than capable.

If general flooring and tiling make up most of your work, the FUTECH 3D is a great investment.

FUTECH 4D Electronic – A Game Changer for Wet Room Installation

Now this is where things get interesting.

I couldn’t believe how easy it was to set out the drainage falls in a wet room using the FUTECH Multicross 4D Electronic Laser.

Anyone who installs wet rooms knows that getting the correct fall towards the shower drain is one of the most important parts of the job.

Too little fall and water pools on the floor. Too much and the finished floor can look and feel wrong.

Traditionally, setting out those falls can involve a lot of measuring, checking, adjusting and then checking everything again.

But with the FUTECH Multicross 4D 18VMAX Electronic, the process became remarkably straightforward.

The electronic slope adjustment made it much easier to establish my reference angles, and the additional horizontal laser line, positioned just 20 mm above floor level, is fantastic when working close to the floor.

Instead of constantly moving the laser or struggling to transfer levels, I could work more efficiently and check the required gradient as I went.

Of course, the actual fall towards the drain still needs to be measured and verified, particularly where different floor planes meet.

But what a difference this tool makes!

It’s one of those tools that makes you wonder how you ever managed without it.

What Makes the FUTECH 4D Different?

The FUTECH 4D Electronic offers several important advantages over the 3D model:

  • Four 360° green laser planes – two horizontal and two vertical
  • Accuracy of ±1 mm at 10 metres – twice the specified precision of the 3D model
  • Low-level horizontal laser just 20 mm above the floor – ideal for flooring professionals
  • Electronic slope adjustment – particularly useful when establishing sloping reference planes
  • Motorised self-levelling – precise and convenient operation
  • Remote control capability – convenient adjustments without returning to the laser
  • 18V battery compatibility – using adapters for major professional battery brands
  • IP54 protection – suitable for demanding construction environments

For anyone regularly installing wet rooms, walk-in showers, tiled bathrooms or large-format flooring, these features are genuinely useful.

My Verdict – 3D or 4D for Flooring and Wet Rooms?

If I were mainly installing laminate, timber flooring, skirting boards or carrying out straightforward tiling jobs, I’d be perfectly happy with the FUTECH 3D.

It’s accurate, versatile and has everything needed for most general flooring work.

However, if you’re regularly installing wet rooms, walk-in showers, large-format tiles or working on projects where floor levels and drainage gradients are critical, I’d choose the FUTECH 4D Electronic every time.

For me, it’s not just about having an extra laser line or greater accuracy.

It’s about making the job easier, spending less time setting out and having greater confidence in the finished result.

And after seeing how straightforward it made setting out wet room drainage falls, I’m convinced.

The FUTECH 4D Electronic is a fantastic tool for professional flooring and wet room installers.
